The subject of the corporal punishment of girls in letters to newspapers and magazines has a long and ignoble history. 150 years ago, the letters pages of the otherwise respectable Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine were awash with lurid accounts of the whipping of girls; many allegedly written by the editor to boost circulation. Ever since, newspapers and magazines have published stories about girls' corporal punishment in the full knowledge that they would generate a spate of feverish letters. ..................................................................................................................... In this blog, I will mainly publish the letters pages from late 20th century spanking magazines. Of course, unlike their Victorian equivalents there are no nods or winks; these are openly intended to titillate. One might question the veracity of many of the letters, not to mention the identities of their authors, but there's little doubt they were very popular with readers; pretty much every magazine devoted several pages in each issue to readers' letters and the occasional grainy photograph. As social history, they are worthless, but they can be very entertaining. My own favourites are often the letters that purport to come from foreign readers; there's more than a touch of 'Allo, Allo' about some of them. .................................................................................................................. We live in an increasingly image-dominated world; visual stimulation is everywhere, so I'm aware that acres of newsprint (albeit kinky newsprint) won't be to everyone's taste. Rather than clutter up my main blog with letters, I've decided to keep them separate for those who are interested.
